Organizational Awareness

While working on the write up for our emotional intelligence chapter I came across an interesting term: organizational awareness. Emotional intelligence consists of four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Within these domains are a total of twelve competencies. Organizational awareness is one of the competencies of relationship management. Organizational awareness is understanding an organization's structure as far as mission, vision, values, strategic goals, objectives, work efforts, and culture. This stood out to me because it related to the first topic we discussed in Health Care Management I last semester: mission, vision, and values. Throughout the semester the importance of mission, vision, and values to an organization was consistently stressed. I thought it was interesting how organizational awareness and connection to the mission, vision, and values of the organization is considered a critical piece of emotional intelligence and relationship management. It implements the idea that to be successful within an organization requires complete emergence and understanding of the organizational structure and culture. This topic further demonstrates a constant theme I have discovered over the course of this semester: emerging yourself within your organization. We have learned again and again the importance of not only pursuing diligence in individual work, but also of getting out of your office and interacting with colleagues and truly engulfing yourself in the culture of your organization.

  2. I concur with Regan - I like that you are tying things together. You both drill further down into the weeds in this post, but at the same time show how the fine details connect to the bigger picture. You could do something with this for the "Many" segment.
