Resilience

As humans, we are creatures of habit. But at the same time, we are also creatures that are constantly evolving. While we often resist change, we are consistently going through changes as we go through life. Therefore, it is important in facing the many changes of life to learn to practice resilience. As an example, in class we switched up our seating arrangement to see how it felt. At first, much of the class was unhappy about it. But as the class went on, people adjusted and started to see benefits of switching it up, such as talking with new people or getting a better interaction with the presenter. This is a simple example, however it represents what happens in more life-altering situations, such as losing a job or moving. We must move along with change! Those who accept change keep moving toward success, while those who fail to accept change remain stuck in place.

The chart below represents the various steps people go through during a significant change. As you can see, it takes several steps and quite a bit of time to adjust to major changes. This path lays out the psychological path humans take from shock to transformation.

"More than education, more than experience, more than training, a person's level of resilience will determine who succeeds and who fails. That's true in the cancer ward, it's true in the Olympics, and it's true in the boardroom."

- Diane L. Coutu, How Resilience Works

  1. The seating exercise was simple but clever as a metaphor for change.

You quote Coutu, what does this quote mean to you? Why did you pick it?

  2. Hi Caroline- I love your quotation choice. I almost put it into our presentation because I believe it shows that the only thing consistent within a changing world is how we cope. Resilience is an equal asset everywhere, change is a level playing field.
I am glad you saw the benefits to our opening exercise of seat switching. I hope that everyone gained perspective and appreciated the break from the norm. Except Colleen though, who could no longer see the board!
